Mississippi Spurning Fat People

Miss. Represenitives

There is going to be some controversy in Mississippi over a house bill, that hopefully has a “slim” chance of passing. Absolutely audacious House Bill no. 282 being put before legislature in the State House of Mississippi would require restaurants not to serve obese people in the state of Mississippi.

The sponsors of House Bill no. 282 are W.T. Mayhall Jr. (R), John Read (R), and Bobby Shows (D). Obese is described as people with a BMI of 30 or higher (example: 5′ 7″ and weighing more than 200 lbs), will not be allowed to eat at certain restaurant. How this will actually work and how they would determine who to serve and who not to serve, who knows. If it is a by sight determination and personal preference, then many people will be going hungry.

This is Government trying to control people, telling them how to eat, what to eat, and telling them how much to eat, under the guise of making a better quality of life. Sure, most people could eat better foods and be healthier, but is it governments place to control this? If people want to make themselves fat, or eat themselves to death, people are already aware of the risks of a unhealthy eating lifestyle, much like people who smoke, people who do drink, or people who do drugs, are aware of the dangers of doing so. People are making choices by doing these things, and are aware of the consequences of doing these things. The point being that it is a choice and people should be allowed to make and the Government shouldn’t try to be mother to people. Sure, kids should be taught (in school) the causes and effects of eating unhealthily and the benefits of a healthy diet, and maybe schools that the government are involved in have the right to feed children healthy food (only if the children are not paying for it).

Though, when it comes to the Government dictating who can eat what, it isn’t a far stretch to them telling people what can be eaten, outlawing certain foods, and only making some foods widely available. Those aren’t the principles that this Democracy was founded upon.
