Hillary Is Going To Get In Trouble For A Supporters Remarks
Feminist Gloria Steinem did something pretty dumb, she essentially mocked John McCain for being a P.O.W.. Even dumber, she did it while stumping for Hillary Clinton in Austin, Texas on Saturday. I hope that when Clinton heard this, she wanted to crawl under the nearest rock she could find and hide. Hillary Clinton will need to apologize for this remark carefully though, she will need do be firm and careful in her apology, because she doesn’t need to lose any votes, including those of ultra hardcore feminist.
Steinem raised McCain’s Vietnam imprisonment as she sought to highlight an alleged gender-based media bias against Clinton.
“Suppose John McCain had been Joan McCain and Joan McCain had got captured, shot down and been a POW for eight years. [The media would ask], ‘What did you do wrong to get captured? What terrible things did you do while you were there as a captive for eight years?’” Steinem said, to laughter from the audience.
McCain was, in fact, a prisoner of war for around five-and-a-half years, during which time he was tortured repeatedly. Referring to his time in captivity, Steinem said with bewilderment, “I mean, hello? This is supposed to be a qualification to be president? I don’t think so.”

Got something to say?

What an idiot.
I would have loved to have seen this women spend five years as a POW and still hear her say that.
Her Joan McCain analogy is stupid and Gloria Steinem continues to be a first class idiot becuase of her divisive nature. Her question, however, is valid…
“This is supposed to be a qualification to be president? I don’t think so.”
Spending years as a POW does not serve as a qualification for anyone to run this country. McCain has already made public remarks such as “gooks” and others. There is no question that the extra time served as a POW only reinforced a xenophobic mentality (because of the additional trauma).
Our Foreign Policy would be better served by a candidate that is open to worldwide peace and communications - not one who remains angry at foreigners because of his or her traumatic past… Continuing aggressions for another “100 years” is NOT what we need now.
Hey, Gloria - Iron my shirt!
You know what I love about politics? The amount of censorship that takes place. What happened to my comment of several hours ago?
I’ll post my comment on digg instead…
oh… looks like my previous comment (8 hours ago) displays *only* after a new post has been made (it’s awaiting moderation). Disregard this comment as well as my previous one.
Democrats… these events are the reasons you lose elections. If you want to win, please learn that you can’t let it slip that some of your supporters feel like hating America and/or the people who serve America is “cool”.
Please learn this.
I greatly admire Gloria Steinem and have for over forty years. But nobody is perfect.
Her Joan McCain remark was not her best analogy, however her point about being a POW not being a qualification for President is spot on!
So was her comments in the NYT article about sexism being more restrictive than racism. Unfortunately, discrimination against women is so institutionalized in our society that the vast majority of people - even the erudite ones - don’t see it when it slaps them in the face.
Have you ever heard someone say “His wife is so wonderful. She helps him out with housework and makes sure she spends time with the children.”
Who - other than God (please don’t go there) - dictated that women should bear the burden of housework and childcare moreso than men. Men are actually stronger (usually) and more capable of hauling a child around the grocery store or mopping the floors.
Women’s place in this society is so entrenched in people’s minds that only voices like Gloria Steinem’s cut through it and challenge intellectually honest minds to think past the sexism.
Most people, unfortunately, will prefer to defend their comfortable status quo sexism position and resort to calling the messenger names.
What a pity that Gloria doesn’t get some a little slack for making an occasional imperfect analogy. If she were Barack Obama, 95% of the press corp would be racing to explain it away for her - if they were unable to hide it under the breaking news of a car chase in LA.
