Colin Powell Stabs GOP with Obama Endorsement

Colin Powell Live on Stage

Colin Powell turned his back on his Republican party on Sunday morning and announced strongly that he was endorsing Democrat Barack Obama for President.

“This is the time for outreach,” Powell said, saying the next president would have to “reach out and show the world there is a new administration that is willing to reach out.”

In particular, he said, he welcomed Obama’s president to “talk to people we haven’t talked to,” a reference to Obama’s controversial statement that he would be open to direct diplomacy with Iranian leaders.

“I think that [Obama] has a definite way of doing business that will serve us well,” Powell said.

The move actually came as little surprise since Powell has been advising Obama for weeks and has previously heaped mounds of praise on the Illinois senator.  The endorsement will help but a bit cowardly of Powell to endorse when the election is more than likely already decided.  If Powell had endorsed two months ago this election would likely be a landslide for Obama by now.
