Current Delegate Count For Republican Nominees

   John McCain

After the Republican Florida Primary, John McCain has a nice lead in delegates, and has moved into first place. Florida is a winner take all state, meaning that all of the States delegates go to the winner of the Primary. This win gave McCain the Front runner status and will help him going into Super Tuesday.

Candidate                             Delegates

1. John McCain                           93

2. Mitt Romney                          59

3. Mike Huckabee                      40

4. Ron Paul                                    4

5. *Rudy Giuliani                          1

* Rudy Giuliani is expected to drop out of the Presidential Race and endorse John McCain for President.

Fight For Delegates Enters New Phase

The delegate count is what’s important on both the Republican and Democratic sides of the isle. Right now, (R)Mitt Romney (59) and (D)Barack Obama (63) have the most states delegates perspectively. Obama (152) is actually behind Hillary Clinton (230) when you add in Superdelegates. This presidential race could come down to one or two delegates on both sides. That hasn’t happened in the past, though the political landscape is changing/ evolving over time. This time it could come down to one district in one state. If Michigan and Florida’s democratic delegates are allowed to count again, then this would change the scope of the race for both Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama. All candidates acknowledge publicly that this is a delegate race.

“We are going to compete in all 22 states; you can’t ignore states,” said David Plouffe, the campaign manager for Senator Barack Obama, Democrat of Illinois. “But you want to get as many delegates as you can. At the end of the day, this is a delegate contest.”

Carl Forti, the political director for Mitt Romney, a Massachusetts Republican, said: “There’s two things going forward at this point. One is momentum; but two, it’s about delegates.”

For Republicans, this means, for example, turning to approximately 10 heavily Democratic Congressional districts in California where there are relatively few registered Republicans, making it easier, and less expensive, to win a district and its three delegates. Both Senator John McCain of Arizona and Mr. Romney are heading there on Wednesday.

For Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton of New York and Mr. Obama, it means investing resources — mailings, telephone banks and candidate visits — in Congressional districts where there are an odd number of delegates at stake, creating an opportunity to pick up an extra delegate.”

This Race is going to heat up with 22 states voting on February 5th (Super Tuesday), and a large number of Delegates (1600) are up for the grabs on that day.

Fred Thompson Drops Out of Presidential Race

Republican Presidential candidate Fred Thompson has dropped out of the race for the White House.  Thompson finished a dissappointing third place in the South Carolina primary last weekend.

“Today I have withdrawn my candidacy for President of the United States. I hope that my country and my party have benefited from our having made this effort. Jeri and I will always be grateful for the encouragement and friendship of so many wonderful people,” Thompson said in a statement.

Prior to his public statement, the GOP candidate had begun calling friends, family members and supporters to tell them he was ending his campaign, four months after he formally announced his White House bid, a run that was greeted much more enthusiastically before he actually got into the race.

Many had said that Fred wasn’t running but actually ‘walking for President’.  It took Fred longer to decide to enter the race than he was actually in it.

Mike Huckabee Quote Of The Day

Huck

“Florida’s a unique state because it’s a winner-take-all state … Obviously Giuliani’s put everything in Florida. I mean the good thing for us is there’s no state where we said it’s this or nothing. Thompson said it was Iowa. Then he said it’s South Carolina and in both cases it hasn’t happened for him.”- Mike Huckabee

Huckabee Slams Romney In South Carolina

huckabee

Gov. Mike Huckabee has a list that he released that involve the Club For Growth raising at least $585,000 for Mitt Romney’s campaign. Club for Growth had came out against Huckabee and what they called his liberal economic ways. Romney might catch some flack for the money raising by the Club for Growth, as he claims to not have special interest money. Romney has stated that he does not expect to win South Carolina, so he is focusing on Nevada which votes on Saturday, along with South Carolina. There are also smear attempts at John McCain that are challenging his stand on abortion and immigration issues. Such as, McCain voting in favor of stem cell research. The South Carolina Democratic primary isn’t until the 26th of January. There is a lot riding on South Carolina for the Republican Candidates. If Fred Thompson doesn’t win, it will probably be the end of his run, the same goes for Huckabee who is looking for viability with a win here. McCain is looking for a win here as well. There hasn’t been a candidate that has lost here in the primary and won the presidency in ages. Ron Paul will probably fair about the same as he has elsewhere. Rudy Giuliani has not done much, if any campaigning in South Carolina, so expect the same kind of performance from him as well. This will be weighed much on the republican side and the winner here will more than likely be considered the front runner.

Michigan Presidential Primaries Hours Away, What To Expect

2008

On the Democratic Side there really isn’t that much to talk about seeing as how Sen. Hillary Clinton (NY) is running against Uncommitted. Uncommitted is suppose to be what Michiganders vote for if Barack Obama , John Edwards, or Dennis Kucinich is their preferred candidate. According to Real Clear Politics, Clinton is besting Uncommitted 54.3% -29.8%. Not a big surprise since most all the other democrats have turned their noses to Michigan.

On the Republican Side, this should be interesting. John McCain and Mitt Romney have been going around saying that they care about Michigan more than the other guy. Romney might right now care more, because regardless of what is said about him staying in till the end, if he doesn’t win right now and McCain or Mike Huckabee get the Primary win, that will take what little wind is left out of Romney sails. A withdrawal may not be far behind for Romney at a second or third place finish. Then, you have Fred Thompson who is gaining in popularity after his smart-alec performance in the South Carolina debate. Rudy Giuliani has stated that he is betting all his chips on the Florida Primary, and that will inevitably show tomorrow night. Finally there is Ron Paul who has a lot of grass roots and internet support. Real Clear Politics ranks these candidates as follows.:

1. Romney 27.0%

2. McCain 26.3%

3. Huckabee 15.9%

4. Paul 6.6%

5. Giuliani 5.7%

6. Thompson 5.6%

What is going to happen tomorrow, no one knows for sure. Potential is said to be swinging in favor of McCain. We will find that out and more tomorrow.

Fox Says Fred Thompson Wins Debate, America Says Ron Paul Does

Ron Paul

The South Carolina Republican Debate is over now. It was, well a debate. Most candidates got a few applauses after answer’s, and occasionally some boo’s. Ron Paul answers ,expect for maybe one, lead the crowd into a eruption of applause. Most of the night was about the Candidates linking Ronald Reagan to themselves. As soon as the debate was over, Fox went to a Focus group of likely Republican voters at the Citadel. The focus group overwhelming agreed that Fred Thompson won the debate, and that Ron Paul was the Loser. Hannity and Combs who was talking with the Candidates after the debate agreed with the Focus Group. The only thing that makes this interesting is that they had a poll for Americans to text who they thought would win. As of the end of this article, I can project that Ron Paul won the text poll by at least 8% and that Fred Thompson came in second. Thats pretty impressive by the much muted representative from Texas.
