NJ Signs Bill That Could Take Away States Individual Power In Elections
On Sunday 1/13/08, New Jersey State Legislature signed a bill that could in fact take power away from an individual’s state preference for Presidential Elections. Maryland was the first to sign the little-publicized bill. This could go into effect if enough states sign it. How the bill works is that New Jersey votes for Democratic Candidate x for President and the popular vote swings for Republican Candidate y, then New Jerseys Electoral vote would go to Republican Candidate y. The purpose for this bill is so that the country would not have to go through what happened in the Presidential Election of 2000 when George Bush got the Majority of the Electoral votes, and Al Gore got a majority of the popular vote. This is sure to get its fair share of pros and cons on both sides of the party lines. How about we just go to a popular vote system for anything that needs to be voted on so the winner of the popular vote is the winner, and do away with electoral votes, delegates, and super delegates? That might be fair, and then every vote might count.
