Condi Rice Vice-President?
Secretary Of State Condoleezza Rice is supposedly trying to garner herself a future in the Republican Party and possibly a Vice Presidential bid, according to The Washington Note.
Sphere: Related ContentSecretary of State Condoleezza Rice is speaking this morning to Grover Norquist’s weekly powerhouse gathering at Americans for Tax Reform of conservative associations, think tanks, and political operations.
At the semi-secret gatherings which Republican political hopefuls migrate to to get the blessing of not only Norquist but the diverse parts of the nation’s conservative money and political machinery, Norquist gives everyone in the room 3 minutes to pitch their cause or issue. I have attended before, but if one wants to attend again — no one may write or speak about the internal discussion or who attended.
In this case, however, I am not attending — but a source other than Norquist has leaked this information to The Washington Note and Huffington Post.
As one major Republican operative told me yesterday:
Someone like Condi Rice doesn’t go to Grover Norquist’s den to talk about the Annapolis Middle East peace process. She’s going to secure her future in Republican politics and to position herself as a ‘potential’ VP candidate on the McCain ticket.
Grover Norquist is author of the new book, Leave Us Alone: Getting the Government’s Hands Off Our Money, Our Guns, Our Lives. It would be interesting to know which pages of the book Condi has dog-eared.

Subject: From the Desk of John McCainMy Friends,
Last week, I was humbled to win the support of 1,191 delegates and officially become the presumptive nominee of our party. It was a great honor to also receive the endorsement of President Bush and visit the Republican National Committee to begin laying out our strategy for victory in November. We face a tough challenge, but I’m confident that together we will win.
It’s been a long journey. While I would like to sit back and reflect on what we’ve been through over these many months, there will be time for that later. Right now, beginning today, we must join together as a party. We must unite as we face either Senator Clinton or Senator Obama in November. I ask that you join me today and make a financial commitment to help our campaign replenish our resources to achieve our goals.
Now we move into the second phase of this campaign. Together, we must convince the American people that our shared conservative principles and my election as president, are in the best interests of the country we love.
And this will be, without question, the toughest phase. From this moment forward, whomever the Democrats choose, we will face a candidate directly opposed to us on every important issue facing our nation. The Democratic nominee will increase the size of the federal government, raise your taxes, and withdraw our armed forces from Iraq’s front lines based on an arbitrary timetable. My commitment will be to cut taxes, reduce the size of government and bring the war to the swiftest possible conclusion without leaving the region in chaos, or an enemy emboldened to attack us elsewhere with weapons we dare not allow them to possess.
As I’ve said many times, this election is about big things. And it will be the most expensive election battle in history. The Democrats have demonstrated their ability to raise an astonishing amount of money for their campaign. Soon those resources will be focused on me. We must be ready. I am asking today to help replenish our resources and begin the long difficult march to victory by making a contribution of $50, $100, $250, $500 or even $1,000.
We have prepared for this fight for a long, long time. It begins today. We’ve come this far. Let’s go on to victory.
Thank you,
John McCainP.S. I cannot overemphasize how critical it is to rebuild our campaign resources as quickly as possible. I urge you to please make whatever contribution you can today, right now, by following this link. There will be no second chances in this fight. This is our moment to join together and show the strength of our party. Thank you.
Congressman Steve King Maintains His Statements About Obama
U.S. Representative Steve King (R-IA) made statements on Friday that if Barack Obama wins the Presidency terrorist will be dancing in the streets. On Monday, King defended his statements and felt them to still be true. This guy obviously isn’t the sharpest tool in the shed.
DES MOINES, Iowa - An Iowa Republican congressman on Monday defended his prediction that terrorists would celebrate if Democrat Barack Obama were elected president, despite a rebuke from aides to John McCain, the GOP’s apparent presidential nominee.
“(Obama will) certainly be viewed as a savior for them,” Rep. Steve King told The Associated Press. “That’s why you will see them supporting him, encouraging him.”
King said his offices have been bombarded with calls — positive and negative — since he said Friday that al-Qaida “would be dancing in the streets in greater numbers than they did on September 11 because they would declare victory in this war on terror.”

John McCain Takes Texas and The Republican Nomination
Sen. John McCain has had a good night, winning all primary contests that were held for the Republicans. John McCain has been projected to win Texas by a wide margin.
Sen. John McCain will get the magic number of 1191 delegates, and clinch the Republican nomination, and even if he doesn’t get to 1191 Tuesday night, Mike Huckabee bowed out of the race tonight, giving McCain a clear and easy path to the nomination. Not that Huckabee was a threat to John McCain, but he cleared out of the way to allow McCain to do some bridge building with the conservative republicans.

Update 9:30 PM: Mike Huckabee drops out race and endorses Sen. John McCain
After a lot of laughs and some votes for former Governor of Arkansas Mike Huckabee, it is looking like he will withdraw from the Presidential race tomorrow.
A Huckabee senior aide tells NBC/National Journal that Huckabee tonight will congratulate McCain and will be in touch with the McCain campaign tomorrow from Little Rock to coordinate a concession.
“The handwriting is on the wall,” the aide said, indicating that was the plan whether or not McCain officially reaches 1,191 delegates tonight.
The aide said that Huckabee wants to have contact with McCain tomorrow in Little Rock before deciding what next to do.

Make it twelve in a row for Sen. Barack Obama. Obama wins the first declared contest of the night, which Clinton didn’t expect to do well in Vermont.
Sen. John McCain also won Vermont easily, also not a surprise.
Vermont is, or is close too, being the most liberal state.

Mike Huckabee, who is still in the Republican Presidential contest, recently had a sit down with Tyra Banks. He discusses quite a few topics, don’t know how many votes he will gain though.
McCains Birthplace Brings Presidential Eligibility Issue
John McCain was not born in the United States, he was born in the Panama Canal Zone. Though, he was born to American parents at a U.S. military instillation. There is no reason that he shouldn’t be allowed to run, it is not like his parents were foreign or they were dissenters of the United States in a different country. There is no issue here, just the media trying to stir up trouble.
The all-but certain nomination of John McCain to be the Republican candidate for president has again raised a question nagging the Arizona senator: does his birth outside the United States prevent him from holding the nation’s highest office?
McCain, part of a storied naval family and a Vietnam War hero in his own right, was born in 1936 on a military installation in the Panama Canal Zone. The issue of his birthplace raises the question of whether it qualifies as a foreign birth and therefore violates the constitutional requirement that a commander in chief be a “natural-born citizen.”
South Carolina Sen. Lindsey Graham told the New York Times that it would be unthinkable for McCain - or anyone born on a military installation - not to be allowed to run for president.
“[McCain’s father] was posted there on orders from the United States government,” Graham told the Times. “If that becomes a problem, we need to tell every military family that your kid can’t be president if the take an overseas assignment.

Founder of The National Review and conservative thinker William F. Buckley Jr. (1925-2008) has died at his home in Stamford, Connecticut at the age of 82. Mr. Buckley has been and will still continue to be an influential conservative intellectual. His ideas will live on.
I’m devastated to report that our dear friend, mentor, leader, and founder William F. Buckley Jr., died this morning in his study in Stamford, Connecticut.
He died while at work; if he had been given a choice on how to depart this world, I suspect that would have been exactly it. At home, still devoted to the war of ideas.
As you might expect, we’ll have much more to say here and in NR in the coming days and weeks and months. For now: Thank you, Bill. God bless you, now with your dear Pat. Our deepest condolences to Christopher and the rest of the Buckley family. And our fervent prayer that we continue to do WFB’s life’s work justice.

Sarah Palin, Republican governor of Alaska, is taking a risky move in taking on the oil companies and go against the grain of the Republican Party. Palin has been fighting against corruption in Alaska, taking on her own party, even before being elected as Governor. She has an interesting story and her name has been tossed around as a potential running mate for John McCain, while it is unlikely seeing as most of America knows little about her.
ANCHORAGE (Reuters) - Alaska’s Sarah Palin has made a habit of taking on big opponents and winning, but the Republican governor is facing her toughest fight yet after locking horns with the state’s powerful oil industry.
Palin, 44 has taken direct aim at the traditional comfortable partnership between the big three oil companies in the state - BP , ConocoPhillips, and Exxon Mobil, and the state Republican party.
“The oil companies have been hugely influential in Alaska, certainly over the last decade and a half with the prior two administrations,” Palin told Reuters in a recent interview.
“(For) Alaskans, as owners of the resource … it is time to embrace our sovereignty.”
Palin’s clashes with the three giants that control the state’s vital oil industry have endeared her to some Alaskans wary of the companies’ power.
